Course Description:
VMI’s refresher course is thirty hours long; ten hours of classroom and twenty hours of skills training. We teach days, evenings, or weekends. VMI’s refresher course is designed for Certified Nurse’s Aides who have completed an approved Certified Nurse’s Aide course in the state of Connecticut and whose registration has lapsed.

A nurse’s aides’ registration does not have to be renewed if you worked as a nurse’s aide for an 8-hour period of time within a recent 24-month period in a health care environment approved by the CT Department of Public Health. If the registration does lapse the nurse’s aide must call the Department of Public Health for advisement. They may ask you to take a refresher if a long period of time has passed.

Pre-Requisite: Must have been registered as CNA with state of CT Department of Public Health; physical and Tuberculine test.

COURSES

CNAR01 – Orientation Clock Hours – 1
Introduction to organization of health care facilities, the type of patients, the health care team and the nurse’s aides role. Fire and safety procedures.
CNAR02 – Infection Control Clock Hours – 1
Procedures, techniques for maintaining infection control and “Universal Precautions”. Proper cleaning and use of gloves, mask, etc. to stop the spread of microorganisms and pathogens.
CNAR03 – Relating to Patients – 1
Communicating effectively with patients, using verbal and non-verbal skills. Considering the patients needs; psychological, spiritual, physical and social. The importance of the patient record.
CNAR04 – Body Mechanics Clock Hours – 1
Learning the proper techniques for lifting and transporting the patient, without causing harm to yourself or the patient. Use of equipment such as; slings, lifts and wheelchair.
CNAR05 – Vital Signs Clock Hours – 1
How to take measurements and record; temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. Understanding the different types of thermometers, the difference between normal and abnormal results.
CNAR06 – Patient Care – 1
Promoting patient independence, personal hygiene, AM and PM care, bed making, baths, measuring height, weight, ROM, the patient unit.
CNAR07 – Special Procedure Clock Hours – 1
Procedures involved in measuring diet, nutrition, fluids and feeding.
CNAR08 – Unique Needs and Disorders Clock Hours – 1
Understanding and caring for patients with Alzheimers disease, Aids, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, seizure, stroke, aging, death and dying.
CNAR09 – Medical Terminology Clock Hours – 1
A review of medical terms and abbreviations encountered on a daily basis in the profession.
CNAR10 – Admitting, Trans., Discharge Clock Hours – 1
Policies and procedures for admitting, transferring and discharge. Preparing the patient, dressing, undressing, preparing the room, etc. Patient “Bill of Rights”.
CNAR11 – Clinical Skills Lab Clock Hours – 20
A portion of the lab will be done in classroom and a portion may be performed in the clinical facility.
