Course Description:
Valley Medical Institute’s Patient Care Tech course will prepare the student for an entry level Patient Care Tech’s role in the health care field. The role is an important one, working with doctors, nurses, support staff and other health care professionals and assisting them in hospitals, assisted living centers, rehab clinics and nursing homes. The course will lead to national certification.

Pre-Requisite: High School Diploma, GED or Valley Medical Entrance Exam

PCT01 Assistive Personnel in Health Care
Health Care today, Roles and functions of the PCT, Work ethics, Communicating with the health care team, Assisting with the nursing process.
PCT02 Focusing on the person
Safety, restraint alternatives ,preventing infection, body mechanics.
PCT03 Assisting with Protection Needs
Describe ECG characteristics of a sinus rhythm, causes, signs, symptoms and emergency management of bradycardia, sinus arrhythmia ,tachycardia, sinoatrial block, sinus arrest.
PCT04 Assisting with Comfort Needs
Bed making , Personal Hygiene, grooming, comfort, rest and sleep.
PCT05 Assisting with Physical Needs
Urinary and bowel elimination, nutrition, fluids and blood, Oxygen needs, exercise and activity.
PCT06 Assisting with Assessment
Measuring vital signs, EKG ,assisting with Physical Exam.
PCT07 Assisting with the healing process
The surgical patient, wound care, heat and cold applications.
PCT08 Assisting with clinical situations
Hearing and visual problems, common health problems, mental problems, dementia, developmental disabilities, Rehabilitation and restorative care, mothers and newborns , emergency care and the dying patient.
